Rules for Defining Your Personal Style

Hey there Lovelies,

I am back with a new post just as we end the first month of 2021. As I mentioned in my last post, 2020 was a learning experience. Being that this is foremost a fashion blog, why not provide some tips on defining your personal style. Not surprisingly, this is something that a lot of people actually struggle with. There is a lot of pressure coming at us from mainstream media, or even friends and family, to be or look a certain way. This can often cause confusion on who you really are. For this reason, I thought I’d shed some light on what has helped me define my own style.

Start off with something that you like.

  • You can just start with one piece and work out the rest of the look from there. Sometimes you may not have the whole picture mind, but by starting out with one piece you enjoy and are comfortable with, it makes the rest much easier. You are off to a great start!

Do not worry about looking like everyone/someone else.

  • From looking at magazines or scrolling on social media, you may think that you have to look just like the people that you are viewing. They may be fixed in your minds as the ideal of "having style." Quoting Rachel Zoe, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." As a first impression, it is an introduction to who you are. If you look like someone else, you would be giving off the wrong idea. What do you want people to know or think about you?

You can have a muse or inspiration, but remember to be YOU!

  • This one and the previous one play off of each other. Sometimes, you may not know what direction to go in so you use a celebrity or your favorite influencer to get an idea. Just use it as an idea though as you do not want to get so caught up in someone else's look that you forget your own. Some of these people's looks are created by others and are not true to who they are. With that, comes the possibility that the look will change, leaving you stuck, behind to catch up, or left to figure it out on your own. The best you can do for yourself is taking the time to figure out what you like.

Your style does not have to fit into a box.

  • There are so many different categories and labels when it comes to style. You do not have to restrict your tastes by focusing on one of these labels. For instance, you can be preppy, sporty, and vintage. You can choose to put these styles together or one day you can be feeling a certain way and another day, you are feeling the complete opposite. When it comes to your own style, nobody can tell you what to do. You are in charge.

Do not be afraid to try new things or experiment.

  • How can you really figure out your own lane to style by hindering yourself to simply what you know? For instance, do you always wear one color? Why not branch out and try adding a new color or two to the mix? You may conjure up in your mind that you do not think a particular color, style, or item will work for you, but you'd be surprised. Go into the process with an open mind because you cannot actually knock something until you have tried it.

Let your emotions guide you.

  • When it comes to figuring out what you like, let your emotions take the wheel. They are what will pull you in a specific direction. When shopping, be sure to explore and do not just look at a particular section. Take a look around and get a feel of what you may like. You may wake up one day in a certain mood. It happens to me all the time. "Today I wanna go for the cool poet vibe, or bring Paris to NYC." It's all up to you. Do not push away your feelings if you find something that you like that is not considered typical. You may even be watching a film and see something on a character and wonder, could I pull that off? Go with that feeling!

Always try things on!

  • I cannot stress how important trying pieces on is. Just like I mentioned previously about experimenting and trying new things, how can you do this if you don't try the items on? But more importantly, the FIT is so key to having a great look. You can put all the right items together, but look a mess because they do not fit you well. This goes for things being too tight or too big. Neither is really a good thing. If you are confused about what a good fit it, I can explain it more in depth in a separate post. I will say that if you are seriously considering another size, go with your gut.

Again, these rules are based on what I know and what has helped me. They will get you started on the right path. If you have any questions, please comment down below or send me a message. What was your favorite rule or one you really hadn't considered before? Let me know

Until We Meet Again Loves,

XOXOXO
